We all have needs and ‘need’ all of these listed below needs to some degree. It is when certain needs are removed or threatened to be removed or are decreased or lacking, that we feel vulnerable, stressed, anxious and even outright angry or fearful. As you glance over the needs, some may very clearly be not important or not as important, while others are very dear to your happiness and even existence (you feel as if you could not live without it/them!).
Metal needs … respect, acknowledgment, honouring, inspiration, compliments, meaning, in awe and letting go of what no longer is useful, and takes in the virtues
Water needs … reassurance, courage, listening, wisdom, trust, silence, faith, able to tolerate uncertainty, alone time, unknowing, leaving things be, and knows that empty time (Void) replenishes
Wood needs … control, visions, making distinctions, clear perception, direction, creativity, flexibility, and forgiveness
Fire needs … protection, caring, safety, friendship, warmth, compassion, partnership, intimacy, playfulness and joy
Earth needs … understanding, nourishment, thoughtfulness, service, generosity, support, grounding, and time to think
As these needs are related to one’s CF, take a moment to further reflect on some of these statements.
- What is the root relationship with each of your CF needs (or your non-CF, “Sure don’t need that/those needs!)? This will usually be from a parent-child dynamic.
- Where do you get these needs met currently in your life and in the past?
- How do you feel when these CF needs are less present in your life? How do you then adapt? What ‘symptoms’ tend to appear (e.g., eat more carbs, restless, headaches, stomach bloat, worry)?
- Can you see the correlation between needs and symptoms? If so, you can use this in the future when symptoms (whether body, mood or behaviour) show up. It may be a signal that your CF needs are not being met. Then, you can address and take action in getting the need(s) met ( by looking for past ways – see your answers from #2).
